Mexico increases dependence on imported corn

Mexico increased its dependence on foreign corn, by increasing the portion of imports in its consumption from 31% in 2016 to 39% in 2022, according to data from the Ministry of Finance and the Agricultural Markets Consulting Group (GCMA). Although the Mexican government has set itself the goal of depending less on imported corn, production of this grain totaled 27 million tons in 2022, its lowest level in the last seven years.
